First of all you do not need a sim card to do this but you need an unlocked iPhone.
When you turn the phone on, go into settings and turn airplane mode on. All the ipod functions will work without a sim card.
Your iPhone does not have to be unlocked for this to work. Some might say that it's actually better than a regular iPhone as it has a camera. Any iPhone can be used in that matter even if it's not a 3G iPhone as you will not be connecting to the AT&T 3G network.
You can use your iPhone in that matter to browse the web by connecting to a wi-fi hotspot. Whatever happens, do not perform software upgrade when the phone is connected to iTunes because of a risk that the phone will be locked again and what is described here will no longer work.
If you have tried this let us know how it worked out.
Using data over a local wifi connection is free with your iPhone (or any wi-fi enabled phone for that matter).
It doesn't matter where you are, even when you are traveling if you can connect for free to a wi-fi hostpot you can use your iPhone to surf the Internet, check emails and use applications such as skype. Use the wi-fi instead of your 3G network to save money. You might want to keep you phone on airplane mode otherwise.
You can back up your text messages to your computer simply by doing a backup in iTunes. The downside is that you will only be able to access these messages if you restore your iPhone from the iTunes backup.
At least this solution does not cost any money because you don't need to buy any software to do this.
You just got home with your new iPhone 4G and you want to transfer all the apps you had directly from your old iPhone3G to the new iPhone 4G, don't worry it's not only possible but it's also very easy to do.
To transfer all your apps from your old iPhone 3g to your brand new iPhone 4, go on iTunes on your computer - make sure you have the latest version - . You might want to start by syncing your old phone with iTunes to be sure you have the most recent apps you installed. In iTunes go in the menu under File, find this path File>Transfer purchases. Then plug your iphone 4 into your computer and sync your iTunes account with it. If you did sync your old phone with your iTunes then all your apps were stored into your iTunes library and ready to be exported to your iPhone 4.
Keep in mind that some of the apps might not be compatible with the new iOS 4 that the iPhone 4 comes with. In that case you need to wait for an updated version of the app that is compatible.
