1 Million iPhones sold

In it's first weekend the iPhone has already sold 1 millions units. And it's not even out in France yet. Ten million iPhone applications have been downloaded so far for iTune's App store. The new iPhone 3G is an even bigger popular success than the original iPhone since the latter took 74 days to reach the one million mark. I'm sure the multi-country release helped a lot.

With users from more countries around the world still waiting for the iPhone to be available and the popularity of iPhone apps the iPone 3G will reach 2 million pretty soon.

iPhone 3G in France

The French will have to wait! Until Thursday.

The iPhone 3G will be released on July 17 in France because Orange always launches new products on Thursday and they did not want to make an exception for the iPhone 3G. "L'excéption Française!"

Just like Apple, Orange wishes to encourage new customers rather than old non-iPhone current customers who will pay the highest price to acquire the new iPhone.

For current Orange customers with iPhone v1, the iPhone 3G 8GB is priced at 199 euros and the 16GB at 249 euros with a 2 year contract. Additionally, the Orange customer needs to have accumulated at least 2400 fidelity points to be eligible for the offer.

For a new Orange customer, the iPhone 3G 8GB model will be at 149 euros and the 16GB model 199 euros.

Even more interesting, for a customer who wishes to migrate from his iPhone v1 to the new iPhone 3G, Orange offers a 100 euro discount which brings the price down to 99 euros for the 8GB model and 149 euros for the 16GB models. The customer should have bought his iPhone v1 before June 12 2008.

Last but not least, if the iPhone v1 customer does not have the required 2400 points Orange may grant them to him.

The first iPhone 3G sold to Jonny Gladwell

The first iPhone 3G was sold a 22-year-old student in New Zealand, Jonny Gladwell.

He spent 60 hours in line, in the cold- it's winter in New Zealand right now - in front of a Vodafone shop.

iPhone 3G or iBrick

Many iPhone users are having problems with their phones at this time. "Old" are getting bricked while the "new" 3G iPhone can't be activated in the stores. Neither Apple nor AT&T want to take responsibility but I'm guessing the problem comes mostly if not entirely from Apple.

If you find yourself in this situation iPhone users have reported that if you insist and keep your computer connected and retry until the firmware upgrade is done it might finally work. For activating the new 3G phones patience and another working phone might be what you need.

I know this is really bad service. Depending on who's responsible they should either compensate users with free airtime, free apps- of course not those that are already - or free music or anything that they can give for free that will ease the pain. Maybe Apple can offer a coupon for a rebate at Apple stores, that's an idea.
